BENEFITING: COVENTRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY INCORPORATED
EVENT DATE: Jul 25, 2014
At 9:00 pm Friday July 25, I will start running around scenic Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, Massachusetts - and keep at it until I can go no further. At race's end 24 hours later, I may have completed 44 miles (matching my age), 62.6 miles (equivalent to 100 kilometers), or perhaps even 78.6 miles (the distance of 3 marathons) or farther.
This race will raise money for the Coventry (CT) Historical Society. As persistence is no foregone conclusion, these hours will support more than 300 years of local history, and carry forth the legacy of favorite-son Nathan Hale who said "I only regret that I have but one life to give to my country." The race also officially benefits Christmas in the City and Wakefield Educational Foundation.
24 Hours Around The Lake will be difficult, because an ultramarathon presents so many personal, physical, and psychological challenges. Over mile to mile, hour to hour, will come questions of human endurance over time and space.
If you are within a few hours' drive, stop on by. Our 24-hour timetable makes the drama easy to catch, and even non-athletes will appreciate interacting with this optimistic, committed community. I'd enjoy not only visitors but anyone who might accompany me on one of my extraordinarily slow 3.1-mile loops around the lake. It won't be hard to keep pace, and your presence will help sustain my faltering steps.
In any event, thank you for your support. I look forward to the miles, hours, commitment, and enduring community.
