EVENT DATE: Jul 20, 2017

Dave Hurlbrink

On July 29th, I'm swimming in the 5th Annual Blue Marsh Mile, an open water swim sponsored by the Berks County Aquatic Hall of Fame being held at Blue Marsh Lake, Bernville, PA. I'm working with Hilarity for Charity, an organization focused on Alzheimer’s Disease awareness and research, to turn my swim into a fundraiser in honor of my mother, Ann Hurlbrink. Gratefully, she keeps her "perfect" sense of wellness while dealing with dementia's challenges. Knowing Mom's fantastic laugh and sense-of-humor, this made perfect sense as she would be the first to agree with Charlie Chaplin who said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted!”. We love you Mom! In the time it takes me to swim this mile, 27 more Americans will develop Alzheimer's. It's projected that the cost of Alzheimer’s care will consume 25% of all Medicare spending by 2040 and more than 14 million Americans will develop the disease by 2050.  According to the National Institutes of Health, to date, the federal government has allocated between six and ten times more funds for cancer research ($5 billion annually) and HIV/AIDS ($3 billion) than Alzheimer’s (currently $650 million). This imbalanced funding is troubling given that Alzheimer's is the only disease in the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. with no cure to slow or prevent it. While swimming a mile is a challenge, it pales in comparison with the daily struggle so many families endure. Please help this cause if you can. No matter the amount, every donation is important, meaningful and appreciated! Thanks and see you in the water! Dave
