“Crossing for a Cure” – Raising Funds & Awareness to Support the Sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breath over time. This terrible disease not only affects the lungs but also other major organs. It is estimated that in the United States alone, there are over 30,000 individuals living with CF. In the world, there are over 70,000 individuals suffering through the effects of CF. By all reasonable estimates, over 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. This terrible disease not only adversely affects quality of life but also limits life spans to a very short average of 37 years. Currently, there is no cure for CF.
This disease must be eradicated!
Across the United States, a cure for Cystic Fibrosis is actively being sought. Much of the work relating to finding a cure and optimal treatments for CF is coordinated through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This organization supports research to discover and develop new CF treatments. They report that, “In 2015, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the second drug to treat the root cause of cystic fibrosis, a defective protein known as CFTR. The first drug targeting the basic genetic defect in CF was approved in 2012. The arrival of this group of drugs, called CFTR modulators, signals a historic breakthrough in how CF is treated. It's expected that CFTR modulators could add decades of life for some people with CF.”
Despite these breakthroughs, individuals diagnosed with CF face many difficult challenges. Within our local South Florida community, there exists an organization that is dedicated to providing programs to directly support sufferers of CF and the families of these sufferers. These programs provide assistance in three major realms: lifestyle intervention & improvement opportunities; education; and financial support. This organization is the Piper’s Angels Foundation.
The premiere fundraiser for the Piper’s Angels Foundation is the Crossing For A Cure Adventure Race. According to the organizers, “The Crossing For A Cure is a long-distance endurance charity paddle challenge race that takes paddlers 75 miles across the Gulf Stream from Bimini in the Bahamas back to the Florida mainland. The event was inspired because of the incredible health benefits of the Ocean for those living with Cystic Fibrosis.”
This year, I am making the commitment to join others in doing something to stamp out this disease and support local, South Florida families who are dealing with the devasting effects of CF. I am appealing to you (my family, friends and colleagues) to join me in my efforts to “do something” to effect positive change in the lives of our suffering brothers and sisters. With my outrigger team, Lanakila Iki of Ft. Lauderdale and Hollywood, I have accepted the challenge to paddle the 75+ miles across the Atlantic from Bimini to Palm Beach County to raise awareness for CF. That challenge also comes with a pledge to raise at least $1000 to be donated directly to the Piper’s Angels Foundation.
For those of you that know me well, you also know that “Challenge and Adventure” are my middle names. It was hard to resist participating in such an epic feat; however, this event is so much more significant than just an “adventure.” This act will profoundly affect the lives of many individuals with lasting good for many years to come. I invite you to partner with me.
I really need your support. Please access the link listed here to be forwarded to my fundraising page. While there, please make a generous donation. Remember that 100% of your donation will directly impact local families. Additionally, I request you help in another way. Planning for participation in this event also comes with some costs. I will need to raise funds to cover a safety boat to accompany my team on this Gulf Stream Crossing. There are also transportation and lodging expenses associated with this feat. Please help me by making a secondary donation to my “Go Fund Me” page. Any additional funds remaining in this account after the event has concluded will also be turned over to the Piper’s Angels Foundation.
I really appreciate your generosity, support and faith in me…
