Thank you all so much for yo…
Thank you all so much for your donations, support and kind words of encouragement over the past months. Our BALS Marathon Team raised $104,324 from 191 donations. You are all incredibly generous and I hope you feel great about that. It feels good to do good!

The L.A. Marathon went well for the whole team. Mary completed her first 26.2, so she was guaranteed a PR. Maureen is a veteran marathoner and kept her focus on the pizza and beer at the finish. Tom stayed with our wheelchair marathoner, Chris, for the whole distance. Mike was having a tough day with early debilitating shin splints, but when he caught up to the wheelchair at mile 20 he was able to enjoy the last six miles running with the chair, having put his own pain in perspective. Pushing the chair is a very uplifting experience and the runners and spectators really respond to the effort. There is a tradition at the end that the ALS marathoner gets out of the chair and walks across the finish line with his family. It’s an emotional experience and worth taking a look at the pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/Beat-ALS-Marathon-Team-686930354690923/

The ALS Association’s Chief Scientist, Lucie Bruijn, Ph.D. MBA, sent a nice update explaining how our donations are funding research right here in the West through the Neuro Collaborative, which combines the efforts of three prominent laboratories at Cedars-Sinai, UCSD and the Gladstone Institutes (UCSF). These efforts are currently leading to actual clinical trials that show promise and also are developing technologies that will facilitate their transition from bench science to effective therapies. There is hope and we are making progress.

I’d like to express one last thank you for sticking with us these four years. I know donor fatigue sets in and that’s especially true after Michael’s passing, which took away that personal connection and urgency. But I know exactly what Michael would be doing if he were here and one of us wasn’t. He would be putting his head down and doing the work and trying to help other families dealing with the worst news they will ever hear. He would want to offer them some comfort and hope. And that is why we will be back next year and we hope you will be right here with us.

Well, our 2014 Beat ALS Mara…
Well, our 2014 Beat ALS Marathon is now over and we all completed the 26.2 miles in the heat so we don’t have to give any money back! Paul, Ryan and I want to thank each and every one of you. All 318 of you and your families. Together we raised $126,467, which is a testament to your kindness, your generosity and to your love for Michael, Julia and their family. It is reciprocated as you will read in Michael’s note below. If you would like to check out some photos of the day, please visit the BALS facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beat-ALS-Marathon-Team/686930354690923 Thank you and we will see you at the finish line in 2015!

Tom, Ryan & Paul

Dear friends and family, I am humbled by the generosity of everyone contributing to this effort. These are resources well spent as ALS research is hitting a critical point where this disease will become a manageable condition in the relatively near future rather than a terminal diagnosis. We are privileged to have become acquainted with some of the best researchers in the field and all indications are that like MS over the past 15 years, ALS treatment is poised to make great advances. However, drug development is a tedious and expensive process and we are all thankful for your joining the fight.

A particular thanks to the generals leading team BALS into battle: Tom, Ryan and Paul. I am blessed to have such talented and dedicated brothers and friends and for that I am grateful. Julia, Billy, Cecilia and I are touched by the grace bestowed on us through your generous donation and prayers. Know that we offer up our prayers for you too. Thank you.

Michael

And from the ALSA-OC:

Wow, what more could be said about the success of our 2014 LA Marathon team. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the ALS Association Orange County Chapter, THANK YOU for helping us achieve what too many believe unachievable. Together we celebrated Jodi and the hard work of her fellow athletes (BALS): Paul, Tom, Ryan and Michael. The FIVE of them in coordination with all of you completed a grueling 26.2 miles in a hot and difficult running environment. Because our Board underwrites the costs of this event, 100% of the money raised goes directly to fund research for a cure.
