David & Fundación Runa
Organized by: David Clark
EVENT DATE Sep 12, 2014
Beginning this fall, I will be joining Fundación Runa as a volunteer, working on their Community Development project and the Forest Conservation and Watershed Management project in the Ecuadorian Amazon Basin.
Fundación Runa is the non-profit branch of Runa, a social enterprise that I recently worked with in the Northeast US. The Fundación's mission is to empower rural communities through developing existing resources, fair market access, cultural communication and exchange practices, and eco-system management.
Recently, Fundación Runa received a MacArthur Foundation grant to begin their Forest Conservation and Watershed Management program. Volunteers will be researching agricultural buffer zones, compiling policy and feasibility studies with local governments, creating a monitoring system, and mapping conservation areas with GIS. For more information, see: http://www.fundacionruna.org/forest-conservation-and-watershed-management-internship.html
Another project of interest is the "Indigenous Artisanal Development" project--just one of the foundation's many community development projects, focusing on micro-enterprise development and community education programs. (http://www.fundacionruna.org/indigenous-artisenal-entreprise-development.html).
For rural communities in the Amazon Basin, safety, education, health, and resource protection are vital to the livelihood of many. On my trip to the Napo Province almost two years ago, I observed first-hand the positive impact of an organization that continues to empower those in need. I am very much looking forward to connecting with these communities and doing what I can to assist them in protecting their natural resources, cultural identities, and ideas.
This fundraiser is looking to cover partial operational and travel costs for a six-month commitment period. Expected operational expenses for individual work with the foundation is $100 per week, at 24 weeks, totaling $2400. Travel costs are expected to be approximately $900, including flight and public transport. Generously, Fundación Runa is providing room & board at no cost! I look forward to sharing my experience with you all and thank you for any support, financial or otherwise!
Thanks for your time and consideration.
