BENEFITING: Delaware Humane Association
As Operations Assistant at DHA, one of my responsibilities is pulling dogs from other shelters and bringing them to our facility to find forever homes. Gigi, who was picked up after being found as a stray, is one of those dogs.
Little dogs have always held a special place in my heart, but more recently I have taken to ones with a "smushy" face, like Gigi. From the moment I was contacted about her, with only a picture to go on, I was in love! I waited anxiously for several days until I was able to go and see her. I kept thinking about her sitting there, waiting for someone she loved to come reclaim her, and wondering if they had abandoned her.
After finally meeting Gigi, it was clear that she had some medical issues, but I was unsure of the full extent. All I could see was a precious dog whose family gave up on her, and who needed someone to give her another chance. So, I agreed to transfer her to DHA and hoped for the best.
Unfortunately, after a medical exam, we discovered that she was in worse shape than anyone realized. In addition to skin issues, missing hair from allergies, and dry eyes from not being able to produce her own tears, she will need an expensive surgery called Ear Canal Ablation. This surgery is essential because Gigi is suffering from infections in both ears which have progressed over time after being left untreated. The infected tissue has hardened in her ear canals, making it impossible to treat it with ear drops. Although the surgery is expensive, it shouldn't be a reason for anyone else to give up on this sweet girl. With a little help, she can be a happy, vibrant, loving companion again!
I hope that people who have a love for animals and their well-being will help me to help raise money in support of DHA's Walk for the Animals. I am doing this not only for Gigi, but for all of the animals at DHA, whether they need extra medical care or just room and board while they wait for someone special to adopt them, however long it takes.
Thank you for your support!
