Dawn Abate - Delegate for Bernie Sanders
Organized by: Dawn Abate
We did it!! You helped me reach my goal :)
July 22, 2016
EVENT DATE Jul 25, 2016
Hello. My name is Dawn Abate. I have been elected as a Bernie Sanders delegate representing Congressional District 18 in Florida, which represents St. Lucie, Martin and Northern Palm Beach Counties.
A Delegate is supposed to represent the People’s vote in their Congressional District. Sadly, the outlandish cost of being a delegate does not represent the individuals who voted for me or most of the other delegates who will be heading to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 25th. This is why many of us delegates are asking for financial support to help offset our expenses.
We are not compensated for our trip and due to tight security at the convention, we are being asked (aka required) to stay in a specific hotel that costs $830 a night, which includes taxes and fees. We are also being told we should plan on eating at the hotel which means $25 for lunch and $35+ for dinner. (I'll be smuggling granola bars and raman noodles on the plane!)
I am a 39 year old single mother of a 13yr old. I was raised in Jensen Beach and am happy to have returned to this special little paradise after spending a decade living in DC. I work in fund development / community outreach at a non profit organization in Stuart, where among other things we operate the biggest food pantry in Martin County. Each month the organization reaches 6,000+ individuals who are food insecure, which means they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
Did you know that 80% of the people who receive SNAP (food stamps) in America have jobs? Sadly, these jobs don’t pay a living wage, so these individuals will remain the working poor.
Everyday I see people who come to the food pantry feeling desperate and anxious.
- I see the under-employed single mom who can’t afford the costs of daycare for her twins, so she had to quit her minimum wage job. Her ex-husband works three jobs to keep a roof over their head, but it's still not enough.
- I see the senior citizen who comes for bread and produce the last week of every month while he waits for his social security check to come in.
- I see the Veteran who has PTSD from two tours in Iraq. He finds it easier to live in the woods because his mood swings prevent him from holding down a job.
- I see the 45-yr old woman who is always well dressed when she comes to the pantry, she looks polished and put together. She has a decent paying job, but she has bad credit and nobody will rent her an apartment. She lives in her car.
What does this have to do with Bernie Sanders?
Bernie has been advocating for people just like this for over 50 years, and he won't ever stop being an advocate for what is right and just in the world.
Bernie’s authentic care and concern for others is why he has such respect and admiration in our country.
Bernie Sanders is consistent. He has integrity. He has compassion. And he has a plan for our country that will actually help us as human beings. He has a plan that will actually help our Mother Earth.
Bernie Sanders understands that human need must come before corporate greed.
How have I helped Bernie Sanders?
Since August 2015, I have organized more than 50 Bernie events in my community - mobilizing hundreds of volunteers. In October 2015 Bernie's staff asked me to join the National Campaign's State Calling Team, where I helped develop the weekly conference calls that connected volunteers throughout the country directly with the campaign. These calls proved to be instrumental in building the yuuuuuge voter contact program that helps Bernie win votes. Through these calls, I've reached thousands of volunteers and organizers all over the country.
I'm committed to voting for Bernie Sanders at the convention and I am grateful to be part of this Political Revolution!
I am excited to have this once in a lifetime opportunity to not only nominate Bernie Sanders as the next President of the United States, but to also help shape the Democratic Party’s platform.
We need a progressive platform that will meet the needs of all Americans!
Every $ you donate will help!!!
