BENEFITING: The V Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
In the three years I have been running for Team V, my "why" has gotten bigger, stronger and, unfortunately, the list of loved ones affected by cancer has gotten longer. After completing my 3rd marathon, and going above my fundraising goal, I thought that was it. I felt I had achieved what I wanted to and told myself it was my last marathon and last Team V event. I was surprised when the so-called "post-marathon blues" wouldn't go away. And a nagging feeling wouldn't subside. I finally realized...I was not done yet. I didn't feel satisfied because I felt there was more still to be done and there was more I could still do and give. After all, cancer is not gone yet, is it? People are still fighting, suffering and too many are still losing their battle. I'm not a doctor. I'm not a scientist. I cannot cure cancer. But I can help bring awareness, I can run and I can raise funds for those who can cure this horrible disease. We can all be a part of curing cancer - by giving, by increasing awareness and by praying.
I hope you will join me on this journey in any way you feel led to support this cause - whether it is making a tax-deductible donation, sharing my fundraising page, offering fundraising suggestions and/or saying some prayers.
The V Foundation was founded by ESPN and former award-winning NC State basketball coach Jim Valvano. Coach Valvano was diagnosed with cancer in 1993. When he created the Foundation, he knew that it was too late for research to save him. But he spent his last months alive creating a legacy of hope for others diagnosed with this debilitating disease.
In the past 22 years, The V Foundation has awarded more than $150 million to cancer research and related programs nationwide.
Jim Valvano’s “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”® spirit is alive now more than ever. And it is the perfect motto to carry us through the largest marathon in the world. With continued support, we will forge ahead with innovative research. Join us on Team V or support us through a donation – either way, you are making a difference and saving lives.
