BENEFITING: EULENSPIEGEL PUPPET THEATRE COMPANY
Okay so this isn't really about dead puppets. It's about Day of the Dead (or Dia de Los Muertos) and a puppet show called "Stories and Cuentos".
Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company is an internationally known puppet company based in West Liberty, Iowa. In October 2011 Monica Leo, puppeteer extraordinaire, hopes to bring Mexican puppeteer Eli Portugal to town to perform "Stories and Cuentos" and especially do some Day of the Dead related workshops and activities.
If you don't know, Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and some other Latin American countries on November 1st and 2nd. It is a time to remember loved ones who have passed on with altars, special foods and candy, and decorating graves. It is more of a party atmosphere than the usual grimness associated with the dead.
Why celebrate it in West Liberty? Because over the last 30 years my little town doubled in size and most of that increase in population is from Mexico and Latin America.
Why do I care? Because when I was growing up in this small town the family business was grave markers. I always thought cemeteries were nice places to hang out. Now I'm a psychic medium. I LOVE the idea of a holiday that is sort of a Mardi Gras with the Dearly Departed.
I'm hoping to raise the money to make sure Eli can come visit us, but if you are interested in hosting (and paying for) a performance of "Stories and Cuentos" and/or a Day of the Dead workshop, that works too. They will travel anywhere in the U.S.
