The Issue:

In February 2012 the death of Trayvon Martin shook the community of Sanford. Within the firestorm of reporters and analyst that seized the community, were the familiar trends of disdain between community and local government officials. This mistrust has led to tensions within households, which at an alarming rate spilled into the streets. Currently, Sanford is going through a crisis mode. Currently, Sanford fails to meet the state average in categories; such as, unemployment (9.6%), higher education, and poverty.

Since 2010 the city of Sanford’s crime rate exceeded the national average. According to Sanford had a crime of 501.5 for the year 2011. The national crime rate average (per 100,000) was 307.5 in the year 2011. The small town of 50,000 exceeded the national average in both violent crimes and property crimes. With a national story brewing within the city, and tensions still at an all-time high; it is imperative for the community to unite and show their strength.

It is with this charge that the members of R.E.A.L. (Reaching Every Aspect of Life) will fuse the city of Sanford, through a Day of Unity held Saturday October 19, 2013. In a joint effort with Wake Up Mentoring, the Seminole County Day of Unity calls the youth to act within their community. This day highlights the successful youth of Sanford, and engages those less fortunate. Our charge is to introduce certain services and resources to citizens in Sanford. Furthermore, allowing elected officials; such as, the new Chief of Police and others the opportunity to face the people they are serving. Finally, this day serves as a bridge builder to the community as a whole. For too long an apparent “gap” drove the community of Sanford. It’s our responsibility to familiarize every segment of Sanford to resources which reside in their community. And to unite its citizens on a common theme, and that theme is progress.

Funding and Distribution

Our goal for this campaign is to engage the youth of Sanford. All funding will go towards set-up cost and marketing expenses. The members of R.E.A.L. also plan to distribute over 1,000 book bags filled with school supplies and other hygienic utilities for children within the Sanford community. Furthermore, R.E.A.L. plans to place at least 10 young boys and girls in Sanford into Pop Warner. We understand the importance of activity and engagement among adolescence. And we as an organization feel compelled to help those that want a way out of the normal day to day violence. Finally, at the conclusion of the event R.E.A.L. plans to offer a scholarship for a young achiever within the community. This scholarship will secure an students books and some other small expenses. R.E.A.L. will offer the highest achieving student that upholds our criteria. The scholarship amount will meet the sum of least $1,000 usd.
