Hi! I promised to share stories of hope and success to those who gave through my fundraising page for HopeWorks. We always focus on the horrific nature of abuse - and I'm not saying it isn't horrible, but the work we do at HopeWorks is transforming something terrible into something positive, healthy - even joyful! Your donation makes stories like these come true...
Susan came to HopeWorks seeking counseling regarding a relationship that was verbally and psychologically abusive to the extreme. While she received these services, she hired an outside attorney to help with her divorce and custody proceedings, which unfortunately resulted in joint custody of the kids between her and her abuser – now ex-husband. The abuse continued through the children as the father refused to let Susan bring the kids to counseling and repeated told the kids that mommy was the root of all the problems in the family along with other horrific manipulations. With support from her counselor, Susan got the courage to appeal the custody ruling. She decided to let HopeWorks attorneys represent her in court. HopeWorks legal department worked closely with Susan to show how despite the lack of physical abuse, the extreme nature of the verbal and psychological abuse along with the mistreatment of the children was domestic violence and was causing irreparable damage to Susan and the children. Susan won the appeal and now has full and permanent custody of both children.
Trudy had been a victim of domestic violence and came to Howard County General Hospital to receive medical care as a result of injuries caused by the violence. HopeWorks sent an advocate to meet her at the hospital to offer support and connect her to available resources. She declined our offer. The next month, Trudy came to the hospital again with new injuries from another violent incident. We again sent an advocate to the hospital to provide crisis response services. Trudy couldn’t believe that we were there again and were still willing to work with her. She decided that it was time to leave and upon discharge came to stay in our shelter. Since Trudy began her healing journey, she has utilized many of the services that HopeWorks has to offer – hospital advocacy, emergency shelter, legal services and counseling. She still has a way to go to determine what her next steps will be in creating a new life for herself, but she always points out that she never knew help was available until we walked in the door.

On behalf of HopeWorks, I want to thank you for your generous financial contribution made through the Purple Purse Challenge. Your donation will help sustain the comprehensive programs offered to survivors of domestic and sexual violence at HopeWorks.

Through counseling, legal services, emergency and transitional housing, an abuser intervention program and community education and outreach, we make a difference every day in the lives of men, women and children impacted by family, intimate partner and sexual violence. Your support is valuable, not only because it helps to fund these vital services, but because it strengthens a community where violence will not be tolerated.

Help. Heal. Hope. The impact of your gift is immeasurable. Thank you again.

With deep appreciation,
