DCFS Torrance Faith-Based Breakfast for Foster Care
Organized by: Georgia Calhoun
The goal of the faith-based breakfast for community leaders is to recruit foster families and volunteers as well as accumulate resources for children and families in the system.
This fundraiser will raise money to host a faith-based breakfast for community leaders to spread awareness for the needs of foster children in Torrance foster care system. At the breakfast, representatives from DCFS will come to speak about the current situation of the foster care system. The hope is that these community leaders will then pass on this information and create a network of community members who can accumulate resources, volunteer, or potentially become foster families. The DCFS needs leaders who can bring large groups of people together to support this cause; donating money to support this breakfast will help to improve community awareness and involvement.
Need for Foster and Adoptive Families:
Approximately 4 to 5 either new or returning children are brought into the Torrance DCFS office each day. On average, these kids are placed in a temporary home in 2-3 days; however, it can take up to three months to place these children in a permanent home. In our community there are only ten foster families. Over the past year, 50% of foster families have dropped out of the system due to new county requirements. The lack of options for foster care in our community causes children to be placed in foster families far away from their friends and family. Through the faith-based breakfast, we hope to inform community leaders who could recruit new foster and adoptive families in order to keep foster children close to their families and improve the overall well-being of the kids.
Need for Volunteers and Monitors:
In many cases, a child taken away from their parent can be placed back at home if the parents show adequate parenting after being monitored over a certain period of time. However, because social workers in the Torrance system can have up to 36+ cases each, they are unable to monitor all the visits due to time constraint. Due to this reason, returning a child home may be delayed. Through the faith-based breakfast, the DCFS hopes to find volunteers to monitor the visits to promote bonding and bring families back together quicker.
Need for Resources
Currently the DCFS uses an online donation system called “the needs portal” to find resources ranging from cribs diapers to scholarship money. At times, relatives can not have a child placed with them because they do not have a crib. In order to help place children in safe homes quicker, the DCFS needs community assistance in these resources. Increasing community awareness through the faith-based breakfast will improve the needs portal by creating a larger pool of resources.
Your donation would help bring together the community to get more people involved. Together we must spread awareness in order to help the foster children in our community.
Thank you so much for taking the time to donate to my cause!
