Ramana's Garden is an orphanage in Rishikesh, India that houses, feeds, clothes, educates and provides healthcare to over 60 children from the local area that would otherwise be homeless. Ramana's Garden also provides schooling to over 300 children from the surrounding area that would not otherwise have access to education who either do not have the finances for it or who would be prevented from obtaining it due to social and cultural norms such as the caste system.
The orphanage itself was founded 22 years ago by a remarkable lady by the name of Prabhavati Devi or “Prabha”. Today it is operated by Prabha, a staff of 14 orphanage administrators, and 12 teachers. Funds are primarily raised through private fundraising efforts, donations to the orphanage during kirtan or the children’s dance performances, yoga classes and lectures that the orphanage provides, and from the proceeds from the largely self-sustaining Ramana’s Garden café (the orphanage grows and farms the organic produce for the food that it sells at the café –thereby teaching children farming, cooking, and food service skills in addition to giving them a sense of responsibility!)
