BENEFITING: FOUNDATION OF ORTHOPEDICS AND COMPLEX SPINE INC
EVENT: NYC Half 2014
EVENT DATE: Mar 16, 2014
I will be running the 2014 New York City Half Marathon for the FOCOS (Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine) Foundation. While working at Hospital for Special Surgery, I had the honor of facilitating clinical trials with world-reknown Orthopedic Surgeon, Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, MD., the founder of FOCOS. This is a wonderful foundation. Please help me help them.
Below is a little bit about FOCOS:
Since 1998, FOCOS has performed over 1,000 surgical procedures and has had over 27,000 outpatient visits. Our care includes physical rehabilitation and orthotic services. In April 2012, FOCOS opened a 50 bed dedicated orthopedic hospital. that continues to serve populations in West Africa.
FOCOS partners with local institutions and health care professionals. The work of FOCOS not only improves the lives of patients, but it also increases the productivity of a community.
<!-- Content -->With the indispensable assistance of over 4,000 donors who have contributed in excess of $16 million to date, FOCOS has evaluated thousands of patients from different parts of Africa and performed over 1,100 corrective orthopedic and joint procedures in Ghana for adult and pediatric populations. The donations have also helped to build a 50 bed dedicated FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in Ghana which opened in April 2012. The FOCOS Hospital's mission is to provide comprehensive orthopedic services including diagnostics, imaging and laboratory, outpatient consultation and surgical care to adult and pediatric populations in Africa. FOCOS aspires to become the premier orthopedic teaching hospital in the sub Saharan Africa.
Through an international network of over 250 volunteers, FOCOS sends teams of medical professionals to Africa and parts of the Caribbean to provide comprehensive, orthopedic care to patients in need. The opening of the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in 2012 made Ghana, West Africa, the hub for our work. FOCOS sends teams of 30-40 volunteers to Ghana four times each year to conduct complex spine and joint replacement surgeries. Smaller teams of volunteers often travel to other parts of Africa, such as Sierra Leone and Ethiopia, and the Caribbean, including Jamaica and Barbados.
