My name is Deborah Rice, I am here to advocate, educate and help bring forth awareness about Sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis (pronounced: SAR-COY-DOE-SIS) is an inflammatory disease that can affect any organ in the body. It causes heightened immunity, which means that a person’s immune systems, which normally protects the body from infection and disease, overreacts resulting in damage to the body’s own tissue. Very little is known about sarcoidosis: the cause remains unknown and there is no cure.
It is estimated that more than 200,000 people in the United States have sarcoidosis. Struggling with the disease myself, I know how important education, research, and community support services are in finding more effective treatments and to provide access to quality care to those living with the disease. Because there is little awareness, only people who have dealt with it know the devastating effects of sarcoidosis. This proves to be a huge obstacle when trying to fund new research, which is why there are so few effective treatment options for patients and no new treatments on the near horizon. Together we can do great things!
