Skin cancer – the most common cancer in the U.S. – is difficult to fight once it develops. In particular, melanomas tend to be fast-moving and all-too-frequently fatal. That’s why the Weizmann Institute of Science is investigating skin cancer from a number of perspectives, including genetic mutations and resistance to treatment. Prof. Yardena Samuels, a gifted young cancer researcher who was head of the Molecular Cancer Genetics Section of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Maryland before coming to Weizmann, is using the power of DNA sequencing to identify new genetic mutations involved in melanoma. One of her discoveries, a mutation found in nearly one-fifth of melanoma cases, is particularly encouraging because it is located in a gene that’s already targeted by a drug approved for breast cancer, and thus may also respond to that drug; preliminary clinical trials are underway.

By keeping researchers funded, you can help wipe out skin cancer!
