Everyone talks about the "C" word. When I was 13, I learned about it the hard way. My grandfather- my best friend, my role model, the greatest man I have ever known- had colon cancer. Thanks to organizations like The V Foundation, we can start talking about another "C" word: celebrate. Cancer didn't take my 'Abuelo's' life, and I was able to celebrate several more birthdays with him.
As I grew up, cancer survivorship would touch my life in many ways, and I began to realize how little we talk about those who "never give up." When Stuart Scott accepted his ESPY award last year, he reminded us that we can beat cancer by "how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which we live," and that survivorship is a group effort. We often don't understand what it's like to have survived cancer, much less how to love someone that has survived it. The V Foundation was established to not only help prevent and treat cancer, but also those who are fortunate enough to beat it.
I was inspired to run the NYC Marathon so that others like me get to celebrate more birthdays.
