Hello!! If you have read the story on my fundraising page, then you already know quite a bit about me. To give you a bit more background, I was living in San Diego, CA for fifteen years before moving to Guam. Military life is not something I am familiar with since I only joined it in 2014. Before that I was very used to living in one place for many years. I have a large group of diverse friends in San Diego that I miss terribly. I also had a great job working as an Exercise Physiologist in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Facility at Sharp Memorial Hospital. I miss the job, my co-workers, and my patients! I had been there for almost 8 years, so we were like a big family. Moving to Guam was definitely a huge change for both Carlton and I. He had been on shore duty in San Diego, so there were many days when he would be done with work around 1 or 2pm. Now that he is attached to a submarine again, there are many days when I do not see him until 6 or 7pm. Sometimes later and sometimes not at all if they are away for a deployment. Many might think living on Guam is so great because it's a tropical island but I have been very frustrated with the lack of resources. I can't work here because my job does not exist on Guam. Instead I have been doing personal training in my home. Many items we were used to getting at a local grocery store or Target are not available here unless you order them online. Even then, the produce here is definitely lacking. Good produce is difficult to find and organic produce is nearly impossible. Most of the produce and meat is flown here from the states, so the meats are all frozen.
Don't get me wrong, there are definitely highlights. There are restaurants that have good food, there are lots of hiking trails and many great beaches. I have also been introduced to the military community and made many friends here. They are very supportive of each other and it really is important when you live halfway around the world from your family and your husband is gone for months at a time. Carlton is planning on retiring from the military once we complete our "tour" here. We are both looking forward to that very much!! Now we are just hoping that we can have a baby to bring back to the states with us!
