Three years ago when I first started training for the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon with Team Living Water I could not stop telling my friends and family about the amazing efforts of Living Water International to provide the world with clean drinking water. Joining the team was an easy decision since this was a matter close to my heart after volunteering with the Peace Corps in Central Africa. Even better, each Saturday I reconnected with old friends I had not seen in years and made many new friends along the way.
This year, against her will, I signed-up my darling mother Rosalie to join Team Living Water and train to walk her first half marathon. My mother is an amazing woman. She completed her first sprint triathlon when she was 67 years old and last summer at age 68 earned FIRST PLACE in the Women's 65+ division. Even with this amazing accomplishment she still was not certain that she could walk 13.1 miles. After some convincing she decided she would give it a try and we have been having a great time walking together every Saturday. We have not had this much time in ages to simply focus on each other without any other distractions and I can honestly say that I look forward to every walk with her.
Then on March 1 all that changed when she had a heart attack.
Now my goal for training with Team Living Water is twofold: provide clean drinking water to keep people in developing countries healthy and keep my mom walking so she stays healthy. While my mother is disappointed she cannot walk the half marathon this April she is still planning to walk the 5K and maybe the half marathon next year ...
