I am truly honored to be a member of the MetroWest YMCA 2018 Boston Marathon Team.
My family is full of runners. My mother, who is one of 10, ran the Boston Marathon in 1981 and many of her siblings have also run marathons. My sister and I share a bond over running together and in 2016 ran our first Half Marathon together. I am also what you would call a true Bostonian. I was born and raised here, going to Boston Public Schools my whole life. Every single year I would go watch the runners speed by Boston College, cheering them on and thinking one day maybe I'll do this. As a kid I was always so amazed by the runners, and soon I started to hear about my friends and family running it themselves. After my mom told me the story of her running Boston, I was inspired to do it myself. It has become my top bucket list item.
This year more than ever I want to make my mom proud. While on my honeymoon in Hawaii I received a call that my mother had suffered a stroke. We had just had such an amazing wedding weekend filled with joy and celebration so hearing the news that my mother had a stroke a week after was crushing. I had no idea what to think or do...I was 5,000 miles away...and I was upset she hadn't told me right when it happened but that's my mom, she cares so much about me that she didn't want what was happening with her to ruin my honeymoon. She's doing okay now but it's a long road to recovery with many challenges ahead of us. She is very proud of me for wanting to run Boston, although she reminds me regularly that she was an all-star runner when she did it so the road ahead will be challenging. I am excited to share my training journey with her, and bond over the ups and downs that come with it. She is pushing me to accomplish my dream of running a marathon at all, and I could not think of any other one than Boston to do.
Why am I running for the MetroWest Y? The Y has been a part of my family’s life for as long as I can remember, I grew up going to summer camps and after school programs at our local Brighton branch. Now that I am a Framingham resident I see that the MetroWest Y is a place that is dedicated to helping those in our community with accessible programming in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Like any non-profit there is always more to do and I know the funds raised will go to benefit all the great work being done at the MetroWest Y.
Thank you so much for your support, not only is it benefiting a great organization it is helping me reach a goal that I have always wanted. Boston is truly magical, and I cannot thank you enough for helping my dream come true.
