Kevin Paretti's Fundraiser:

Denali to Prevent Colorectal Cancer

EVENT DATE: May 17, 2011

Kevin Paretti

I have started this initiative to do something. That's very general. There is a reason. I want to have a bigger purpose. I want to act. Climbing For Change was set up to have no boundaries. It is to invest my time and energy in to whatever I feel needs to change. It is fitting that the first change I embark on is the one that catalyzed my motivation to act.

So here's the story... My father was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in July. If you're not familiar with it, it claims 655,000 lives worldwide per year, it is the fourth most common form of cancer in the United States and the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. There is no cure when it reaches Stage 4, but it was and is preventable. He is from a generation of "non-prevention" and is set in his ways. He does not exercise, and his diet is primarily some form of red meat and some form of potato. Vegetables never enter his body. That is the change I want to make. I want to increase the knowledge base of my father's and your father's generation, so they will understand that it does not have to happen. Lifestyle changes like diet and exercise can prevent and hopefully eradicate Colorectal Cancer.

My goal is to raise 1 dollar for every foot above sea level to the summit of Denali. That's 20,320ft and $20,320.00. My plan is donate the money to a charity that focuses specifically on prevention, screening, and awareness. I feel there is too much emphasis on treatment, which is reactive. There needs to be a shift in the paradigm to being proactive with this.

Please join in me in making this change possible. If you can't give money, talk to people you feel could make a change. If your parents are like my dad, if you are like my dad, or if you yourself have a similar lifestyle, it is never too late to make the change. We can prevent this!
