BENEFITING: Ronald McDonald House of Durham and Wake, Inc.
Denny Schoonmaker lived an incredibly full life - delighting in backstage passes to the Broadway musical Annie, enjoying never-ending love and giggles with his family and friends, trekking around Disney World, becoming a real cowboy for a night, learning his numbers and letters, kicking off a jam-packed Red Sox game by saying "Play Ball!"...and enduring countless surgeries to battle liver cancer and receiving a new liver. Somehow, he managed to pack all this in by the time he was 5 1/2 years old! Join us as we honor his sweet memory (and those unforgettable dimples) with Denny's Wolfpack Punch to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Durham and WakeMed.
While Raleigh was always home and treatments were at UNC, many of Denny's surgeries and his liver transplant took place at Boston's Children's Hospital. It was there that the family found a true home-away-from home with the Ronald McDonald House of Boston. This past spring, Ronald McDonald House of Durham partnered with WakeMed to offer families the same home-away-from-home experience the Schoonmakers received. And because they hold good memories and much gratitude for RMH, the Schoonmakers want to help other Triangle families feel the same warmth, acceptance, support and love when they need it most.
An avid North Carolina State University (Wolfpack) fan and lover of all things red, Denny would have been six this Monday, 8/31. Thanks to Backyard Bistro, we are able to host a drink stand featuring a Denny-inspired, kid-friendly (red) drink called Denny's Wolfpack Punch. Come join us on Saturday, September 5th from 2-5 in the Backyard Bistro parking lot in memory of Denny as we raise money for Ronald McDonald House of Durham and WakeMed. We'll be really tough to miss with our decked-out, vintage Airstream!
Call it Karma, call it paying it forward...it's just good people doing good things for their neighbors in need.
