Dental and Teaching Volunteer Mission- Sri Lanka
Organized by: Lindsay Bordeaux
Hello everyone! I am a dental assistant by trade, and one of the things I really enjoy doing is volunteering abroad in countries that receive little to no healthcare. I am used to traveling, but in the past two years have fallen in love with the idea of traveling "with a purpose." In my case, it is to help people. Two years ago, I travelled to Micronesia on a dental mission trip that really introduced me to the world of volunteerism. I went as a dental assistant, having never gone so far by myself before. It never crossed my mind that that trip would encourage me to want to attempt to apply to dental school. I was so moved by this mission, that I took steps to pursue this goal and I am still on this path. Since then, I was blessed to be attending NYU College of Dentistry's Clinical Research Masters Program. I had personally undergone many changes. Yet, I felt the urge to continue my love of volunteering. This past November, I joined another dental team and I travelled to Uganda to provide free dental care to people once again. (Please reference my past fundraiser to see the work my team and I had done and the impact this trip had on us). What has amazed me is that each experience has brought perspective into my life in ways I never thought imaginable. In the coming months, I have been given yet another opportunity to do this, but in Sri Lanka. (You can view: http://tealeaftrust.com/ , for information on the organization I will be joining). I will be heading to the Tea Estates, an area that is primarily comprised of lower-class, poor, tea field workers, who rarely have access to adequate health care and an inability to learn the English language. Lack of resources in terms of healthcare and education places them in a constant cycle of poverty. This is particularly why this mission for me will be part medically related and part teaching. In addition to this, I will also be going into the fields to help them to manually pluck tea leaves, as this is part of both women and children's daily lives and their only source of income. I am asking your help to make this mission possible for me, as myself and anyone who has volunteered under such pretenses knows, random acts of giving can be quite costly. Also, I intend on keeping you updated with the progress of my mission and producing visual results for you to see the beauty in this mission. Kindly consider helping my cause. Any amount will help.
