I have a really good relationship with the men and women over at SOS Radio. A couple weeks ago, I stopped by the radio station to talk with the See More

THE STORY:

My name is Chris Gabriel. In June 2015, I traveled with my churches' first timers mission trip to Nicaragua. It wasn’t only my first time on a mission trip, it was my first time traveling outside the U.S. Because of the minimal cost of the trip, I financed it myself and didn’t rely on fundraising at all. Even though the trip opened my eyes to things I had never seen before – extreme poverty and unimaginable living conditions – I think my experience would have even been that much more enhanced if I had fundraised and thereby bringing others into my story in a personal way. Because they would have played a role in making my trip become a reality, in essence the trip would have been no longer mine, but theirs as well. The last day we were in Nicaragua, Benji Zimmerman, our trip leader, sat us down in the common living area of where we were staying and what he said that night really spoke to me. I personally took it to heart and applied it to my life after I got home. He said that in order for this experience in Nicaragua to count for anything and to really make a lasting difference for the Kingdom of Christ, you have to take your experience here in Nicaragua bring it back home and do something with it. Everything we did in Nicaragua isn’t unique to Nicaragua. Those same things can be done here or anywhere else for that matter. Benji said that the last thing he wanted us to do was to leave, go home and immediately fall back into our normal daily routine completely dismissing our experience in Nicaragua as merely a vacation or a cool memory. Hillsong United wrote a song years ago entitled Hosanna. “Break my heart for what breaks yours” is the climatic verse in the song that spoke directly to my heart years ago and still rings as true now as it did then. I felt God calling me to let my worship be more than just a song sung at church. My worship has got to reflect into every part of this life God has given me, even in the most mundane of circumstances. In the months after we returned from Nicaragua, God spoke through Benji when he suggested I look into and pray about an organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM). I began doing research on the organization and found that the location in Denver focuses on having compassion on those less fortunate than myself or, in essence, molding and shaping my heart into one that breaks for the things that break His heart. I knew this is what God was calling me to do the second I found YWAM Denver. I applied and got accepted to their Discipleship Training Program (DTS) beginning in May. Jesus said to His disciples in the Gospel of Matthew, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” YWAM DTS is broken up into two segments – Bible school and an outreach overseas. The total cost for the program is $7,000. $3,500 of the total cost is going to Bible school and $3,500 for the outreach. I’ve already paid for the school portion myself. I plan to save an additional $1,500. In an act of obedience of laying everything at the foot of the cross, I’m quitting my job and selling my car. I want others to come on this journey with me, I want others to share this experience with me, but most of all, I want others to be impacted by the life-changing works God is doing through me. Because of this desire I have, I’m asking for financial help. I need to fundraise $2,500 before May 9, the date I leave. Thank you and God Bless!
