More than 200,000 children in Michigan have special needs. For these children and their families, success in school is dependent on the services the Detroit Institute for Children provides. Over the past two years, requests for services have increased more than 50%.
Summer can be an extremely challenging time for children with special needs and their families. When school doors close for the summer, many children and parents no longer have the ability or the means to access enriching and educational opportunities. Research spanning 100 years shows that all young people experience learning loss during the summer months. The learning loss for children with special needs is even greater. Using the goals established through their school plans, our summer program continues steady, consistent developmental experiences so that the child returns to school with the same level or improved ability.
Your support will help us reach our goal of $100,000 to fund our summer program for high risk children with special needs.
