The Detroit Design/Build Dreamscape is a collaborative initiative between the James and Grace Lee Boggs School, its neighborhood, and student designers from University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture, which provides access to faculty with experience in the various scales of design needed to complete this task. These graduate students are working with the school and its community to foster engagement in the built environment for elementary students in Detroit through both the design and the construction processes of the project. The Dreamscape will evolve as an expansion of the place-based mission of the Boggs School into the larger community by designing and building a unique landmark in an historically under served neighborhood on the east side of Detroit. It will be part of the public realm in that community and will provide highly articulated spaces for all ages to enjoy and participate with. The place we envision will be designed for activity in three major facets of education today: mind, body, and togetherness. This project has a special opportunity to combine traditional and nontraditional play spaces into an innovative dreamscape promoting critical, creative, skill-based learning and healthy, active play for the youth of this community!
Sustainable communities cannot be built or designed overnight, but by collaborating with an important organization full of grassroots connections to the neighborhood sustainability can evolve over time. The Dreamscape is built on this ideal, providing space for programmed and unprogrammed events to take place and build upon each other, sustaining an active, social environment for children to construct their minds and bodies. It will incorporate gardens and rain water retention facilities as well as make use of recycled materials and new technologies that can inform the youth of the neighborhood about sustainable design and construction methods. The Boggs School provides a solid foundation for grassroots community development to occur. Their collaboration with our team of sustainability-minded designers and engineers fills a void between students at Taubman College and the City of Detroit with a productive collaboration that will sustain the Dreamscape project through completion.
