Fortunately for most of us we have no experience with being homeless. We have not wondered where we will sleep on any given night, if we will have dinner, or whether we will have clean clothes to wear the next day. Unfortunately, too many DPS students have such concerns on a daily basis. During the 2014-15 school year, the Detroit Public Schools had 701 students registered as homeless. It is anticipated that that number will remain the same, or potentially grow during this school year. Beyond the usual challenges associated with growing up, these students face additional social, emotional, physical, and learning barriers.
The Detroit Public Schools Foundation has helped to create a safety net for these young people. We have been able to offer support in the form of clothing vouchers, eye exams, school supplies, and field trip entrance fees that are generally paid for by parents. Additionally, the Office of School Nutrition has been supportive with universal access to breakfast and lunch. Beyond the homeless, thousands of students rely on these meals for their daily food intake.
$30,000 will provide sufficient funding to support 700 homeless students for a full school year, thus ensuring their attendance at school and the materials essential to full participation.
