Thanks for taking the time to read about my volunteer project. I am a sophomore at Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Bloomfield Hills is about a half hour away from Detroit. As a student in the Bloomfield Hills School District I realize how lucky I am to receive such a fantastic education. I also realize how unfortunate students in the Detroit Public School system are.
Over the last year and a half I have been working very closely with R.A.D. (Reinstitution of Arts into Detroit). This organization was created by a student in my district. It was created to reestablish an art program in the Detroit school system after theirs was recently cut. The schools that R.A.D. has been working with most are O.W. Holmes Elemntary-Middle and Logan Elementary. It has been very successful thus far and has opened my eyes to the problems with the Detroit Public Schools.
Next year O.W. Homes and Logan are both shutting down and merging. I have been in contact with the vice principal and a teacher at O.W. Holmes recently. I want to help with the transition for the students and supply both academic and and athletic supplies to the new school. I will need your help in order to buy the supplies for the students. The supplies will vary from pencils to basketballs. Please share this with your friends, family, coworkers, etc. With any questions please contact me at DPStransition@yahoo.com
