BENEFITING: Reclaim Detroit

EVENT DATE: May 10, 2012

THE STORY:

We’ve been raising a storm of good work with the Detroit Youth Energy Squad this year – since November, 45 students from four Detroit high schools have been weatherizing homes, starting school gardens and recycling projects, and even working on the launch of rain-barrel making business. They're also learning about green jobs and getting help with college applications.

All of this has been super-inspiring, and we’re gearing up for an intensive 8-week summer program.  Kids will be in the field every day from 8:00 – 4:30, teaching residents--mainly senior citizens--how to save energy and installing thousands of supplies to make their homes less drafty and more efficient.  The students will develop the communication skills and professionalism to become leaders in the green economy and earn an $1,100 AmeriCorps scholarship.  Providing free home energy visits to 1,000 low-income households, they will save clients a quarter million dollars collectively and prevent 1,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions!  36 Detroit youth and 18 adult AmeriCorps crew leaders working to revitalize their communities, reduce pollution, and serve senior citizens is sounding sweeter than pie.

But there’s one small hitch – a decision by a conservative Michigan Appeals Court eliminated 1/3 of our funding in one swoop, with no warning or recourse.  We cranked out the grant requests like an assembly line to close the gap but still came up a bit short.   Not by much, but enough to make a difference.  Now what?  Do we need to turn away students who have been dedicated to D-YES all year and are eager to make a difference?  Tell households on the verge of energy shutoffs that we can’t help?

Fortunately, we see a better alternative – enlisting you for support.  We know it feels good to do good, and once you heard our story, you'd be compelled to help.

We’re offering some pretty sweet thank yous to boot.  For 25 bucks, we’ll send you an autographed 8 x 10” photo of the team with a personal message.  At $75, the students will be your servers at a special supporters celebration breakfast in August.  And if you’re committed to supporting D-YES at the highest level ($200 or more), we’ll send a D-YES crew to your home to provide a free energy assessment and install up to 17 energy-saving supplies!  If you’re outside of Wayne or southern Oakland County, you can designate the home visit for friends or family.

We couldn’t do this without your support.  See us in action, spread the word, and donate today!  http://www.youthenergysquad.org/
