THE STORY:

When I was given a child with special needs, I didn't know where to turn or what to do first. I quickly learned that rural Missouri was not the ideal place to live if you have the need for special services. We were very lucky to find some very caring providers who drove a long way to help us weekly.  I came to realize that not all families were as lucky as ours and that there was a huge need for OT services in the rural Missouri area.  With some encouragement and a huge leap of faith, I quit my career and went back to school to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant, in order to bring Occupational Therapy 'back home' both to Brady, as well as other kids in rural Missouri in need of OT services.

When someone has a disability, adaptation becomes key to successful navigation of his/her world.  As Brady grows, we are learning how to adapt things to make him most successful, both at home and at school. Several of the children I have worked with also have had various things in daily life that have required adaptation.  Many times, these adaptations are 'high tech', costing large amounts of money that sometimes are solely paid for out of pocket.  When I learned about Adaptive Design Association, Inc. and their 'low tech' solutions/replacements of these costly 'high tech' devices, I instantly knew that I needed to learn how to do this and bring these services to the people of Missouri.  I can do this through direct services that I provide, as well as the training of other individuals in Missouri, who can then go out and also provide the service.

Approximately 1 in 5 people in the U.S. have a disability and the older we get, the greater the chance we will become ill or disabled. Whatever the diagnosis, it will be limitation and a lack of adaptation that will become our biggest challenge.

My goal is to raise $500 to partially offset the cost of this endeavour.
