BENEFITING: GAVI Campaign

EVENT DATE: Nov 12, 2011

DGHI 2011 MSc-GH Cohort Students

THE STORY:

Pneumonia is the number one killer of children worldwide, and many people don’t know it.

World Pneumonia Day is November 12, 2011 and the Duke Global Health Institute's 2011 Master of Science in Global Health students are trying to vaccinate one child for every member of their cohort.  The 29 members of the cohort would like to raise $1,450 in an effort to vaccinate 29 children against the deadliest diaeases.  ‪‪Your donation can save lives.  Join us in the fight against pneumonia by supporting the GAVI Alliance's campaign, "Give Kids a Shot".

By supporting the GAVI Campaign, your dollars will protect children and their families.  Please consider donating:

- $10 to pay for half of a pneumonia vaccine
- $20 to shield a child against pneumonia
- $50 to protect a child from the deadliest diseases (pentavalent, yellow fever, rotavirus, and pneumococcal vaccines)
- $250 to protect a family

Pneumonia Facts:

1.  Pneumonia is the world's leading killer of children under five, claiming one young life every 20 seconds. That's more than AIDS, Malaria and Measles combined.

2.  98% of all childhood deaths from pneumonia occur in developing nations.

3.  Pneumonia is one of global health’s most solvable problems. We have safe, effective and affordable tools to help children.

4.  We can win the fight against pneumonia.  Estimates indicate that more than one million children’s lives can be saved annually with widespread use of vaccines and improved access to antibiotics.

5.  Together we can ensure that everyone works together to make pneumonia a priority. Join the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia.

The Duke MScGH is an innovative graduate program with a flexible, tailored approach to learning about global health.  Based in the Research-Triangle, a hub of global health activity, Duke and DGHI offer a world-class faculty and committed program staff to support student learning, fieldwork and research, and professional development.
