EVENT DATE: Nov 04, 2012
The mission of Diaspora Community Services (DCS) is to provide a range of culturally- and linguistically-competent, community-based programs that empower families and individuals to overcome the obstacles to their well-being and self-sufficiency. Our goals are to: assist immigrants in acquiring skills, information and social support services critical to survival and adaptation to life in the United States, and to reduce the incidence and prevalence of chronic disease through education and referral to appropriate health care providers.
Since 1981, DCS has broadened its client reach and developed programs that lay the foundation to empower entire families and communities. Approximately 10,000 individuals annually receive services either directly, via referral and/or by attending our various community sponsored workshops and events. DCS’s service population is low -income, Caribbean, Haitian, African-American and Hispanic-many represent Brooklyn's large immigrant population. Our clients have some of the lowest poverty, health, literacy, school performance and employment indicators in New York City.
In 2007 DCS expanded our services to Haiti, by establishing, Centre Medico Social de Port Au Prince, a health clinic and community center in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Port Au Prince; Centre Medico Social offers a full range of medical, laboratory, pharmacy and recreational programming as well as a community library.
