The Dighton PTO is looking to raise funds to help to get our campus garden/greenhouse built. The big goal is to have a fully functional, solar powered, aquaponics greenhouse (Aquaponics is the merging of aqua culture with hydroponic gardening to create a mini self-supporting eco-system where you harvest fish which fertilize the water, the plants then grow in the fertilized water and clean the water for the fish). Through this project we would be able to blend Technology, Math, Sciences, and Sustainability along with Nutrition for our students, while also learning about our food sources and how humans can live in cooperation with our environment and to lead a life of less impact on our surroundings. All of this will be done through actual hands-on experiences, which will help students apply the topics they study with the why and the how. Students will learn about composting, water harvesting and testing, solar technology and energy conservation, climate control for vegetation, planting from seeds and seed harvesting as well as many other things. They will also have opportunities to prepare healthy meals and snacks with the foods they produce. This project may even spark some more events in the community like a farmer’s market opportunity for students and community residents.
We have already been able to secure a greenhouse, a solar system, an aquaponics system along with supporting curriculum materials.
So we will use the funds raised here to support the schools with:
Site preparation, purchasing seeds and tools, and an engineer to code the structure for area snow/wind loads.
Please share with anyone you know in and out of the community who might like to support this project.
Please contact Mrs. Fullen the Assistant Principal at the Dighton Campus Schools if you might like to volunteer time/services this spring/summer to help with this project.
