RAAS COMPETITION - A Brief History Raas Competition is an initiative between East Carolina University’s Pirate Raas Team and Vibha-RDU in an effort to help the underprivileged. This will be our first annual Raas competition in North Carolina. Vibha constantly thrives to open the doors for likeminded individuals, hence the birth of this competition. The Vibha family truly believes in and subscribes to this message. We believe that a small initiative taken by us can go a long way in helping underprivileged children fulfill their dreams. Pirate Raas is East Carolina University’s one and only Indian folkdance team. Raas is traditional style of dance that engages audience through upbeat music and energetic moves. The team was established in May 2015, and has since traveled across NC and to VA for various performances and dance competitions. The team has supported many philanthropies and on campus events like Social Justice Symposium, Toys for Tots, Tunnel of Oppression, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Interfaith Pirates, and more. This will be Pirate Raas’ first time working closely with Vibha, a non-profit, on a Raas competition right here in Greenville NC! The team held auditions early September, and is excited to have their largest group yet comprised of 22 intelligent dancers. Team members range from freshmen to seniors, and have majors spanning in various disciplines. Mona Amin, one of the co-captains this year, founded the team during her freshman year and is excited to leave a legacy for Pirate Raas through this competition. She is a senior Biology major from Charlotte, NC. Vibha-RDU will be hosting its first Raas competition this year with tons of enthusiastic support from our volunteers and the community. We believe that going forward, the competition will grow to be the most recognized in the local communities in which Vibha operates. We hope that you will be part of our efforts in the years to come. This competition will be the most remembered and awaited for. We look forward to your support.
