Help save lives in Haiti!

In January 2010, a massive magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti killing over 300,000 people and leaving an estimated 1 million homeless. The earthquake was the worst in this region over the last 200 years. Relief aid was strong at first, but has not had a lasting effect. Emergency food and water has been consumed, tents are shredding, and people continue to suffer. More than 350,000 Haitians are still living in tent camps, and the country continues to face destruction from storms, food shortages, and disease.

This March, a team of public health students and emergency medicine physicians from the University of Illinois at Chicago will travel to Haiti to help communities work towards a more sustainable solution. They will conduct a Train the Trainers program to teach community leaders how to assess hazards and minimize risks. Community members will develop the empowerment skills necessary to protect themselves and their loved ones from the destruction of future disasters, safeguarding their homes, their communities, and their lives.

Your donations will help support the team in their efforts to build local capacity in disaster risk reduction, and develop community resilience!

We can’t prevent natural disasters from happening. But with your help, we can help communities be better equipped to deal with them, thereby minimizing the impact, protecting lives, and helping people recover stronger and faster.
