Briana Hansen's Fundraiser:

Disney Princess for Runyan

EVENT DATE: Feb 27, 2011

Briana Hansen

In college, I was fortunate enough to make friends some smart, hilarious, wonderful people. One of those people was Mr. Michael Runyan, an incredible man with amazing drive, a natural magnetism, unparalleled character, and an infectious smile that took over his entire face. Anyone who was lucky enough to get to know this man in any capacity knows how truly special he was. He was a brilliant guy and dynamic leader who I can't say enough wonderful things about. I absolutely adored him. And I know I was not alone.

On July 21, 2010, Michael was killed in Iraq shortly after being deployed. Obviously, it was a huge shock to everyone who had ever known Michael in any capacity. To know him was to admire him, and to lose him was overwhelming for so many people on so many levels.

Runyan inspired me in many ways. His goofiness and silliness reminded me to not take things too seriously. Not to mention his absolutely addictive smile that made me want to make him constantly laugh. He inspired me to be disciplined through his own example, and reminded me that it's the simple things in life that can bring the most happiness.

He also encouraged my love for Disney Princesses by letting me show him my latest childish Disney Princess toy, or letting me tag him and his roommates as Disney Princess characters on Facebook then arguing over who was the better Princess, or even once, he and his roommates stealing my copy of The Little Mermaid only to have me catch them watching it by themselves in their apartment unapologetically a few minutes later.

I've wanted to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon for a couple years now, but Runyan's passing reminded me that life is too short to hold off doing what you love, and to do what makes me happy. I've never run anything like a half marathon before- in fact, I've only run one 5K years and years ago. But Michael's own discipline for and dedication to his body and to athletic training have inspired me to do this. So I'm going to do it. And it'd help me to know I'm raising money for somebody I thought the world of.

Plus, knowing Runyan, I think he'd get a kick out of me raising some money for him through a Disney Princess event. It would make him laugh. And I was addicted to making that kid laugh.

So, if you wanna donate through this service- AWESOME. It'd be great. It'll help me immensely knowing that I'm running for a long time for a cause I believe in.

If you wanna donate on your own, feel free to send donations to:

The Michael L. Runyan Memorial Fund
Park National Bank
1633 West Main Street
Newark, OH 43055

Either way, I'll be running in a ridiculous Belle costume, cursing under my breath, and snacking on Fruit by the Foot... just to make that kid smile.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
