OM for the World.  Once again our community will gather for gentle yoga, prayer and meditation.  Monday, July 18th 6:30pm.  It could be hard See More

Recently someone asked me if I was still doing that yoga ministry, why yes, yes I am. And I realized that, while the question could have been polished up a bit, it showed that I've been hiding the light of this yoga ministry under a bushel. Three or four years ago, yoga ministry was all I could talk about. I had contacts and connections in several denominations and I reached out to them to try to garner support for this avant garde, out of the box kind of ministry: a ministry that offered an exploration of faith through the physical expression of the body, through yoga, through meditation. Lots of people expressed interest and support but in the was maybe too far out of the box for the institutional church. So, I struck out on my own. I felt so called to this path that I left everything behind and just kept doing what I had already begun: forming Divine Power Yoga Kula. What is a kula? Kula is the sanskrit word for "community of the heart." A kula is an intentional community formed around love, formed around acceptance. Little by little our kula has been growing and we've been quietly doing ministry through my yoga studio in Naperville, IL. We've been so busy I forgot to share with the world what we are up to hence the question: Are you still doing that yoga ministry thing? Here are just a few of the things we have done in the last months: - Asana for Peace: This was a yoga practice based on a meditation of love and peace in response to the shooting in San Bernadino, CA. We lit candles, set intentions for peace, flowed through yoga poses, inhaled love and exhaled peace and shared readings on peace. -OM for Orlando: We were saddened to have the opportunity for another gathering for peace but we do believe we can change the world one breath at a time so once again we gathered our kula for yoga and meditation, focusing our breath and our minds on peace for the world, combining ritual and compassion for the sake of healing our broken hearts and our broken world. People brought food to share so we moved our intention to the table together. -Weekly meditation gatherings: We offer free weekly gatherings to learn and practice meditation. -Yoga scholarships: When a student says they cannot practice yoga because of the expense....perhaps a spouse has been laid off or there is an unexpected medical expense, Divine Power Yoga offers free yoga to these students. We ask them to pay what they can and we currently have two students on 100% scholarship. We believe that yoga is especially important when someone is going through a hard time so they need yoga more....not less. -Yoga for Young: We donated 20 yoga mats to a yoga teacher for the classes he offers at a local elementary school. Each of these events and gatherings is offered free of charge. We took donations for the Orlando Victims Fund, we have taken donations for peace based organizations. And, the reality is that we also need donations to support our kula, our community, our studio, our ministry so that we can expand our ministry in many ways. We want to increase our free/donation based gatherings around peaceful practices and spiritual development. We are in conversation with the leadership of a local homeless shelter about offering yoga there. We are looking at a weekend retreat and more ways to gather combining ritual and physical practice. Some days Divine Power Yoga looks like any other yoga studio....and some days its clear there is something much deeper going on here and we are doing all we can to dig deeper, grow bigger and share this unique expression of faith with more people. We do believe we can change the world: one breath at a time, one pose at a time, one prayer at a time. Will you help us?
