THE STORY:

DIXIE ADOPTABLES wrote -

Who are we?

In October 2016, Dixie Adoptables, an all-volunteer animal rescue, took over operations at the Lucedale Animal Shelter. Our first priority was to make the changes needed to insure the health and safety of the animals. We established a no-kill policy and removed the gas chamber and incinerator that had been used to euthanize and dispose of animals. We implemented intake and veterinary procedures to ensure that all animals receive the best care possible while they are with us.

Despite the many problems that we inherited, we still managed to take in and rehome over 500 animals during our first six months.

But we are more than statistics. We are a coalition of volunteers, businesses, veterinarians, and other nonprofits who work daily to turn our vision of rescuing abandoned and unwanted pets, caring for them, and ultimately finding them a new family who provides them a loving, happy home into a reality.

We are a group of regular people with jobs and families who show up day after day, week after week, and month after month, in good weather and in bad and on off days and holidays to do what we can to help the animals.

We do this because without us, these animals would have nobody and no hope of a better future. We celebrate each adoption as a small victory and we often grieve over animals we were not able to save or who come to us broken and abused. It is both heartbreaking and immensely rewarding work.

What is this campaign about?

While great progress has been made since taking over, there is much left to do. The facility had not been maintained for years and has many structural problems that need to be fixed. Among the most pressing needs are:

- Kennel runs and doors are poorly designed and in poor repair

- The facility has no heating and only window air conditioner units for cooling

- Floors need to be refinished and sealed and the entire facility needs to be painted.

- We need better, larger exercise yards

- We need to make plumbing and drainage repairs

- We need to expand our community outreach to address the core problems with strays such as spaying and neutering and pet owner education.

How will my donation be used?

Our only priority is the animals. There is only so much we can do on our own and your donations will go to provide the maximum benefit to the animals as possible. For example:

-$10 will provide vaccines or veterinary tests for an animal

-$20 will allow us to microchip an animal to ensure that they will never be lost again -$50 will pay for an animal’s spay or neuter and help end the cycle of strays

-$100 will provide all of the initial veterinary care for an animal needed to get them ready for adoption

-$200 will pay to refurbish a kennel run

-$500 will pay for materials to repair and seal a large section of kennel floor

-$1000 will pay for a new exercise yard

This campaign is focused on raising the funds we need to make these critical repairs and updates to the facility and improve our outreach. This is not for our benefit or comfort, but to make the lives of the animals we rescue better and to allow us to save and help as many as possible.
