BENEFITING: RIDING FOR THE HANDICAPPED OF WESTERN PA INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
Dave Lewis, Pittsburgh PA, is running the New York City Marathon on November 3, 2013 and will honor his son Matthew at the same time by raising money for Riding for the Handicapped of Western PA (RHWPA). RHWPA is a charitable organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding to local children and young adults with special needs.
Now in their 33rd year, RHWPA has more than 60 trained volunteers and 7 certified instructors. Ranging in age from 3 to 18, each rider is accompanied by three volunteer side-walkers who accompany the child riders lacking muscle coordination. Riding on a horse uses the same muscle movements of the hip and pelvis that are used to walk, which gives them a sense of freedom of mobility. RHWPA serves over 100 children per year, while many others are on a 2 year waiting list.
Funding is exclusively by donations, fundraising, and grants. Your donation will help provide RHWPA the money needed to keep this wonderful program going.
Matthew has been riding with RHWPA for 5 years and the experience has been invaluable to him and all the kids they serve.
With over 45,000 finishers, 12,000 Volunteers and 2 Million spectators each year, the NYC Marathon is the largest marathon in the world. With the exception of 2012, when the event was canceled due to hurricane Sandy, this race has been run every year since 1970 and is held on the first Sunday of November.
