Every child needs a place to learn and you can help one very special group of students have a place to call school permanently.
Over the past two years students at Breton Downs Elementary School in East Grand Rapids MI have been connecting with students at The Power of Education School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Through a variety of hands-on service learning projects, students in Michigan have gained a better understanding of what it is like to grow up in a developing country without consistent access to things they may take for granted...healthy food, clean water, electricity, health care and education. Students have learned the importance of getting an education in Haiti and why students there are so determined to succeed...often walking miles to get to school and studying until the last rays of sunlight have disappeared. Through video chats and collaborative art projects students have built relationships and realized that although their living situations are quite different, they are much more alike than different.
After leaning that their Haitian peers are at risk of losing the building that they’ve called school for the past 4 years, students in MIchigan ere determined to make a difference. They would like to help The Power of Education Foundation buy the school building that is currently being rented so students can have a forever school. But they can’t do this alone, so they came up with a plan that was inspired by a lesson they’ve learned over the past two years...If everyone does a little bit, big things can happen.
Students are challenging everyone to make a small donation (but they’re okay with big ones, too) to raise money to buy the building. Their goal is $195,000. While that is an overwhelming amount for any one person to donate, the students are confident that if everyone does a little, the money can be raised. Their plan depends on getting a large number of people to participate, so please pass this on to friends, family or anyone else who can donate a little bit.
This is a win-win for all involved with this project: You can feel good that you played a part in forever changing the life of hundreds of children. Students in Michigan will know that they made a lasting impact by inspiring others to get involved. Students in Haiti who are so determined to get an education will have a permanent school
A few wrap up lines
