Doctor Penalosa for Healing
Organized by: Kenneth Lew
An excerpt from a message Rod sent to his friends and family: "Dear Family and Friends, my journey to the Philippines has led me to a very worthy and significant cause that encompasses so many important endeavors that are valuable to me. I have taken a great leap of faith and trust, and accepted a position that has been offered to me to be the program coordinator for MedMom Developmental Clinic - Philippine General Hospital's Teen Cancer project beginning in August of this year. The patients come from some of the poorest communities of the national capital region of Manila and its provinces, hence the psychological services that my team and I will be providing to this population are free of charge. Everything that I have learned in my masters and doctoral programs from Counseling Psychology to East-West Psychology has been and will be fully utilized in this role. As the program coordinator, the responsibilities entail knowledge and experience of clinical and spiritual skills to facilitate therapy to teens who are battling and living with cancer, and to those who are facing the finality of their lives from this terminal illness at a very young age. It has taken me nearly two months to decide on whether this was something that I would even consider for myself taking into account the challenges ahead such as lack of funding, very slim resources, political and systemic issues that are very common in government-subsidized medical institutions, and burn out. But I feel strongly called, and even though I still have my fears and slight apprehensions, I believe that this is where I am needed. This is where I will thrive and develop as a catalyst to healing, care provider, educator, and as a human being. I have to trust God and this process and see how far this will take me.
So with humility and gratitude, I come to you to ask for your help. I need to be able to raise money to finance my livelihood for at least one whole year. My target amount is at least $10,000, but I will be very happy to come up with even just a fraction of this amount with your assistance (or support from other people you know or companies you're affiliated with). This amount will help pay for my rent, transportation, food allowance, personal medical expenses, and other miscellaneous costs. I am not the type of person who finds it easy to ask for anything, but yesterday I felt guided to do so, and so I am. Your sponsorship will support so many children and families who hunger for compassion, unconditional love and support, so please allow me to be your channel of loving kindness for these people in their time of need. I am confident that I will make a positive difference and impact on these children's lives and their family's lives. I will help alleviate some of the pain and suffering from their experiences of illness, loss, grief, hopelessness and helplessness. I have the responsibility, as someone in my line of work and as a human being, to at least try and make a difference in the lives of others. With your help and resources, it will allow me to help others at a better capacity."
Rod has a tough road to travel that a lot of us choose not to even glance at. His selfless actions have lead him to help so many people. Please help our dear friend and family member meet his modest goal of $10,000. However, we have increased it to a more realistic figure of $50,000 to help him further as he helps these poor families go through heart ache and desperation. Whatever you can donate will be received with the utmost appreciation. Your donations will go to helping develop and expand the resources of the program and helping him with his living expenses. For anyone who is going through any sort of loss in their lives with a friend or family member, you'll understand how important a person of his capacity can be for a family needing support.
Thank you for your support, love, and for your kindness.
