BENEFITING: Dogtown Dance Theatre
EVENT DATE: Oct 14, 2016
The Dogtown Presenter’s Series is a two-week fall celebration that will highlight the independent artists and organizations rehearsing and teaching at Dogtown Dance Theatre. Currently, Dogtown is home to eight diverse dance and movement organizations. These dance organizations vary in style, from Latin and salsa dancing to African-Caribbean dance, Flamenco, modern dance, and aerial dance, to name a few. One arts organization will be invited by the Artistic Director to participate in a series of professionally produced performances and community workshops each fall in the Dogtown Presenter’s Series. The Series will increase community awareness of these artists that make the theatre their home. For the inaugural 2016 Dogtown Presenter’s Series, Dogtown Dance Theatre has invited its in-house aerial dance company, Host of Sparrows Aerial Circus. Host of Sparrows specializes in classes from introductory to professional performance training in a variety of circus arts. They currently have, and will hold extended, classes in aerial silks, lyra hoop, static trapeze, contortion, circus tumbling, and partner acrobatics. They will also host a number of workshops in a variety of other fun movement arts that will be available for the public to attend. The teachers that comprise Host of Sparrows are also a professional performance troupe, creating custom contemporary circus arts performances for community and corporate events. Dogtown Dance Theatre will manage the production costs of the concerts by providing the artists with rehearsal and performance space as well as marketing and technical needs as outlined in the budget. Artists invited to participate in the Series will be awarded three full-length performances alongside space for master-level classes and workshops. Dogtown Dance Theatre is fundraising an amount of $5,000 through CrowdRise for the Dogtown Presenter’s Series. Funds raised will go to support a stipend to the presenting dance organization to encourage them to continue to create new art. The Dogtown Presenter’s Series is an innovative way of producing dance artists in the Richmond community. No other dance organization is providing the necessary resources needed to local artists to produce professional level concerts completely free of cost. These resources include rehearsal space, the technical production, marketing, public relations, and a guaranteed financial stipend. The Series also engages Richmond arts audiences in a way never done before within the city limits by offering original community workshops and presenting a wide variety of dance usually not seen in a professional capacity. The Dogtown Presenter’s Series embodies Dogtown Dance Theatre’s mission by bringing professionally-produced dance concerts alongside specialized dance education that sculpts and pioneers Richmond’s expanding, diverse dance landscape. All of the Series’ program content is fostered, created, and presented by a choreographer who calls Dogtown “home.” The Dogtown Presenter’s Series’ own mission is to expose Richmond audiences to Dogtown choreographers who reflect the cultural diversity alive in dance today, to promote artists from a variety of dance styles and genres, and support them in creating new works of expression. In doing so the Series will ultimately nurture long-term and multi-faceted partnerships between Dogtown Dance Theatre, its choreographers, their audiences, and the Richmond community.
