This year, pancreatic cancer is expected to surpass breast cancer to become the THIRD leading cause of cancer related death in the United States and predicted to become the SECOND leading cause of death of cancer related death by 2020. This is not acceptable.
In October 2015, my dad Bruce, was diagnonsed with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. On Novmeber 12th 2015, my dad lost his battle. If anyone could have beaten this disease it would have been my dad, but he didn't even get the chance to fight!
So now it's our turn to fight!
Last year my friend and college teammate Julia ran the Philadelphia Love Half-Marthon to raise money for Project Purple, because her father Carl, was battleing Pancreatic Cancer. Unfortunately, Carl lost his fight with this terrible disease in August 2015. This year I will join Jules to honor both of our fathers, and help prevent this tragedy from happening to more families.
Project Purple is an organization that raises money not only for pancreatic cancer research and academic scholarships, but also for financial aid to support families who struggle to support themselves. Cancer can tear apart a family’s financial stability and ruin the small comforts that were once just daily routines. For this reason I joined the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Project Purple, because it Project Purple has people like me running all over the country in various marathons raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer. Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 26 years Mary, sister Roz, and only daughter Kristi. He had a one of kind sense of humor, and his corny jokes will be missed by all. Bruce worked in scientific sales, but his true passion was fundraising. He was actively involved in his synagogue’s capital campaign, and was helping them to rapidly hit their goals. Following in my father’s footsteps, I hope to channel my inner Bruce and help our team to exceed our mark.
Carl was a father to five children and three grandchildren, a big brother to four, an accomplished surgeon, and a life-long Boy Scout and outdoorsman. Like Bruce, Carl is certainly remembered for his sense of humor. While the two never met, we are sure they would have gotten along wonderfully!
Julia and I will be joined by 11 other teammates to run this Half-Marathon, and we are asking for your support. Help us to reach our goal, because every dollar counts! If we can even give one daughter, one more day with her father, then we have been successful!
