I am Raquel Miller.
I am an actor.
I believe that cultures should speak to each other.
“So? Big deal”, you say to yourself. Besides, what does being an actor have to do with those lofty goals of cross cultural communication in the arts, and why should you care?
Okay, we’ve had a bad start. Let’s begin again.
I believe that the arts can help heal some of the disjointed conversations between cultures and lessen the ever widening gap in communication and misunderstandings that have led to some of the greatest conflicts of our time.
I spent the last several years (who’s counting) in financial services before accepting the truth about who I am authentically. I am an artist, but I am also someone who believes that my life can and should be spent in greater service. I believe I can use my passion for the arts to help heal the conversations we have with ‘others’.
No, I am not here to save the world. In fact, I spent several years feeling lost. I had a career in financial services, but it felt disconnected from who I am. I took the first step and that step led me to found NICODA, the New International Center of Diverse Artists, a not-for-profit performing arts organization whose mission is to excite artistic collaborations between cultures, while inspiring artists to reach inside and touch their own unique vision of self and art.
At frst, it was just me. Imagine going it alone. A year and a half later, I am heartened by the response. We now have over 12 staff members, plus many artists who have joined our mission. In 2010, we produced, Immigrant Voices, and this year, we are producing a 3 day International Performing Arts Festival, whose theme is “How We Are Connected”, an exploration of the cultural DNA of performing arts. It was inspired by the National Geographic Program titled, “The Genographic Project”, which traced the origins and diaspora of the human race. This festival will be a true testament to our mission. http://madmimi.com/promotions/998909
Our goal is to raise $75,000 for this 3 day production by May 21st , 2011.
Please make a tax deductible donation to us now!
**Our tax deductable status is sponsored by New York Foundaton for the Arts, NYFA, so all donations go through them, but rest assured, NICODA will receive your funds.
Thanks for joining us on this journey. Aspire!
