BENEFITING: GANLEY FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011
Emotional and mental health disorders touch each of our lives every day. Each one of us has a family member or loved one that suffers from addiction, depression, bipolar disorder or any of the numerous mental health afflictions that exist. Unfortunately, it is easy to take for granted the gift of emotional and mental wellness. We don't often think about mental illness until we hear of tradegies involving the afflicted, which too often involve young people who have slipped over the edge and harmed themselves or someone else.
Having family members afflicted by mental illness, these tradegies have always had a very personal impact on me. Despite progress in identifying and treating mental health disorders, young people are still lost to depression-related suicide each year on college campuses across the country.
On November 6th, 2011 I'm running the New York City Marathon to raise money for the Ganley Foundation - an organization dedicated to spreading awareness about mental health issues and focussed on suicide prevention amoung our nations youth. http://ganleyfoundation.org/education/mental-health.html
My goal is to raise $2,500 and in the process remind everyone to be grateful for the mind they have, and to take care of those around them. Mental health isn't something we should only think about in the aftermath of a tragedy, but something we're careful to promote every day.
