BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
EVENT DATE: May 30, 2014
In more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries, Relay For Life events comprise the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Each Relay For Life event is special to its community, but the movement's true power lies in the combined commitment of thousands of participants, volunteers, and supporters to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer.
Even though I'm only a teenager, I've seen the effects of cancer firsthand, many times over. I've had grandparents, aunts and friends who were diagnosed with cancer, and while some of them went into remission, others did not. I remember helping my mom care for my great-grandmother, who died from liver cancer. Even though I would do everything I could to take her mind off of it, watching TV and talking to her whenever I had a chance, I still saw how she suffered.
My eyes were first opened to the deadly impact cancer has on the lives of the people that it afflicts when I was 10 years old. A 6-year-old friend of mine, Nia, had been diagnosed with cancer, and so I went with my parents to visit her at the hospital once or twice a week. During my visits I would play with the other little kids there. I realized all the kids were my age or younger, and they all had cancer. It was then that my determination to stop this disease blossomed. So when I entered high school and discovered my school was hosting its own Relay For Life rally for the American Cancer Society, I was determined to help in any way I could. So please, help me help ACS create a world with more birthdays.
