This unique point-to-point race takes the racers from New Paltz on bicycle over a hilly 30 mile course to Minnewaska State Park where competitors run 4.5 miles on trails and swim 1.1 miles across a chilly Lake Awosting, then run another 5.5 miles to swim 0.5 miles across Lake Minnewaska, put on their shoes and run 8 miles of trails past the “Gunks” rock climbing cliffs and up hills nicknamed Godzilla and son of Godzilla, with the finish line in site there is one last 0.5 swim across Lake Mohonk and then a sprint to the top of the mountain finishing at Smiley tower (AKA The Survivor Line). Did I mention you have to carry everything after the bike leg with you until you finish? Running with a swim cap on and swimming with sneakers tucked in your shorts is the best strategy.
The event passes through some incredibly beautiful terrain on state and private preserves without which the final three legs of the race would not be possible. The Mohonk Preserve was initiated 50 years ago through generous land donations and endowments that have continued to allow the treasure to be maintained with and emphasis on Conservation Science, Environmental Education and Land Protection. Mohonk Preserve also has programming that allows underprivileged children to be exposed to the wonder of the natural environment the Mohonk Preserve offers.
