BENEFITING: CRAVEN LITERACY COUNCIL
EVENT DATE: Jan 09, 2016
50! This year I am breaking a couple of social norms as I celebrate my birthday! Hey, I'm 50, so it's allowed. :-) First, I am letting the whole world know how old I am. Second, I am requesting you give me a gift. But, I am begging you to please put down the black balloons and give cash. But not to me, to Craven Literacy Council. As you know, I have been employed with this wonderful nonprofit for the past 7 years. We work hard to train, encourage and support volunteers who give instruction to adults in our area who need to advance their literacy skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and technology. Individuals who do not have the functioning literacy skills that you and I take for granted are more likely to live in poverty and be taken advantage of because they cannot communicate and inform themselves. At this moment, we have almost 100 volunteer tutors instructing over 200 students and there are more students wanting our services. As you know, I am the Executive Director and I pride myself in running a very tight and frugal ship, but the demand is great and the funding is low. So, I thought I would reach out to my friends and family and in honor of my 50th year ask you to make a contribution to my charity of choice. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions or feel free to go to our website for more information. Thank you in advance and remember: Literacy is Important!
