Don't let the bedbugs bite!
Organized by: Christina J
"Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite" What if you didn't have any other choice than to be bitten by bedbugs? This is my family's current situation; we are 4 people (mom, dad, a 4-year and a 1-year old kids) living in one room. This is not an apartment with one room but just one room. How did we end up in this situation? We got evicted from our apartment because we were continuously paying late on our monthly rent -we never owed a month's rent but we were late all the time-. Only one of us is working bringing home $1400 after taxes. With the rent being $1020, not including other living expenses and food, there was no room for anything. Which brings us to our current situation, renting the room was the only solution we found to fit our problem and we were optimist as to the savings we thought we could accumulate before renting a new apartment or home. We couldn't have been further from the truth: because of hygienic reasons I can't cook in the kitchen, which the landlord allowed me to do; there are roaches and mice crawling about; and now we are dealing with bedbugs that are biting my children every night. We moved here in November of 2015 and by January 2016, I saw a few odd marks on Daniel, my 1-year old, which looked like mosquito bites only bigger. So I decided to leave the sliding door close as to not have mosquitoes in the room, however, I kept seeing more marks on my son. And then, one night I saw what was happening, bedbugs were having a feast of my son. At first, they were only attracted to Daniel, back then 6-month old, but they had to expand their palettes to the remainder o the family because of my maneuvers to protect the youngest one, which included holding him throughout the night. These past 6 months or so, I have yet to have a night's sleep for I'm hunting and killing bedbugs so my family can sleep. Right now, I see no other solution than to ask for help. Help us move out of here, please. And, if anyone read this far and has any information about housing assistance in Delray Beach, FL, please contact me. I have already looked into Section 8 which has, at least, a 2-year waiting list. We need something immediately.
