Dear everyone who donated to…
Dear everyone who donated to my cause,

Once again, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your generous contribution to my campaign to raise funds to fight kidney cancer at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Together, you and others have donated over $3,000 to that cause. Every cent of that money will go toward finding new treatments and one day, the cure for this dreadful disease. During my training this spring and summer I lost a number of friends to this thief of life, folks who I had met during the 15 years I have been fighting to stay alive and who I have come to love. It is a hefty price to pay for being active in the survivor community, but one that I do not regret.

I am writing because, as I have learned though hard won experience, we make plans and God laughs. My dream of running the New York City marathon together with my daughter Elizabeth again, which began with an endorphin rush of good intentions and proceeded with a steely determination has been dashed on the rocks of personal injury. I was the first to sustain a leg injury from the grueling training program, followed soon thereafter by Elizabeth. Mine was a pulled calf muscle. Despite intense efforts to recover from it I watched in frustration as my goal of huddling with Elizabeth in the coldness of the start line in Staten Island on November 4th slipped further and further away. Soon after, in Boston she sustained a more serious shin injury from which she was likewise unable to recover.

Our dream of crossing that finish line in Central Park, as we have done together four times before, will not be realized this year. But we are already forging plans for next year. I hope you don’t regret your generous contribution to this cause. It will help improve the lives of many deserving patients and their families. Thank you once again for your willingness to help and I promise you that if the body will favor us, we will cross that finish line in your name one day soon.

Dear Doris, On behalf of Eli…
Dear Doris,
On behalf of Elizabeth and myself, thank you so much for your generous contribution to our campaign to make kidney cancer history. It's the kind of gesture that makes all the work and struggle to get first to the starting line and then to that finish line all the more doable. I ran/walked 5 miles this morning on a perfect, cool morn with that super moon still shining on the still waters of Magens Bay. I know I'll soon be running longer and longer training runs and on every one of them, including the 26.2 miles on race day, you will be along with both of us in spirit. Bless you.
